Neither is able to spontaneously accelerate at thousands of gees or tactically use their FTL drive to evade enemy fire. Thus kiloton firepower is still a legitimate threat to the Sovereign-class if less so than the smaller Intrepid-class.īoth sides prefer to engage in combat at speeds of tens of kilometers per second or lower and ranges lower than a few dozen kilometers where possible. Single digit kiloton nuclear weapons are a legitimate threat to the TOS Enterprise, a D-7 without any sort of modernization, a peer of the TOS Enterprise, is still capable of damaging the shields of an Intrepid-class starship in double digit percentages. The loss of the bridge can cause momentary crippling of capital ships and unpredictable secondary consequences like spontaneous engine firing in the direction of the nearest Death Star. Starfighters may be able to maneuver through capital ship shields at high risk in order to conduct surgical strikes. AT-TEs can do so as well if the shields are down. Starfighters with weapons that effect their targets similar to a cannon round from a jet fighter can damage capital starships if they attack specific vulnerable spots. Phasers are significantly less effective against targets equipped with dense or exotic armors. Photon torpedoes are sub-kiloton in close combat situations as depicted in the TMP era movies. Phasers act as gigajoule particle beams when striking shields, may disintegrate volumes equivalent to the effects of hundreds of thousands of terrawatts when effecting natural objects like planetary crusts or unadapted Borg cubes. 'Sub-kiloton' energy values are the presumption since there are no nuclear flashes or shockwaves in an atmosphere. Turbolasers are interpreted as being similar to phasers: natural objects that are struck by blasters and turbolasers such as asteroids and the ground disintegrate, sometimes with an impressive flash, sometimes not but regardless no direct correlation can be made between how the weapons will effect an artificial target such as a shielded starship made of exotic materials nor any specific energy values derived.
